Cats get lazy in containment. Maybe the previous owner didn't let it do exercise or maybe the cat may have some problem that causes it to gain weight.

Well, he may be a rescue. They may not be the ones who made him fat. Often cats get this fat when people who otherwise had taken good care of their cats, and their cats had been slim healthy and active - suddenly become seriously ill, or the complications of old age hits, and they weren't able to take care of themselves, let alone their cat well anymore. They begin cutting corners with themselves to survive - they don't get to keep up hygiene; they must force themselves to wait for hours to empty their bladder/bowel, because they're in too much pain to get to the bathroom, and they don't get to feed themselves as often or as well as they need, for example. Then, they can't keep up with the kitty feedings. So they cut corners there too. They start filling a huge food bowl, and leaving it out all day, thinking it would be fine - not understanding that cats will continue to eat if food is available. Then, because they're preoccupied with their own huge list of new problems from illness and/or old age, they don't notice how bad things have gotten for their poor kitty, until they're out of control. Often, these people will then simply beg for someone who is healthy, to please come and take the cat, and help it heal. This is a very common reason. They love their cats, and don't mean to harm them. Things are just out of control for them, and really - our society is failing them, because they shouldn't be without care for themselves or their beloved pets. But, it's horrendous that the poor animals and humans suffer =(
