One good suggestion is a head collar, it won’t hurt the dog but it will pull the nose of the dog upward disorienting the dog a bit and causing the behavior to stop much earlier into the action. It’s a good thing to have when you have a dog who won’t listen to commands because it ensures they won’t get themselves or anyone else hurt in the process of walking. And, eventually, they’ll understand that pulling on the leash is not going to get them a good result. It may not be something that’s permanent but to ensure such dangerous behavior isn’t going to cause the injury or death of anyone involved it may be a necessity. Head collars often aren’t tight around the snout either so the dog shouldn’t have trouble with breathing, eating, or drinking like they might with a muzzle. I just think it could help a lot with making sure the behavior doesn’t put the dog or anyone else in danger. The behavior we see demonstrated is extremely dangerous so preventing those hazards while also starting to train the dog is absolutely necessary for the safety of everyone. I understand I may sound a bit repetitive. But if the owner would like to have his dog walking beside/in front of him and not behind him, without being pulled into traffic, a head collar would be the best way to go about it. It just pulls the head and the dog around the other way and stops them from moving further than the end of the leash. It’s really convenient when dealing with large dogs who can pull very hard because it doesn’t allow the dog to choke themselves like a choke collar might and redirects the dog’s attention immediately. I’m just kinda concerned for those people in traffic and for the dog’s and the owner’s safety. I hope they can figure all this out and I do hope that they can find a good method of training without utilizing something that can hurt the dog like a shock collar or a pronged collar. I know that they care about their dog a lot but I also know that some trainers seem to have very different methods of training. Often those methods can make a dog’s behavior worse or even make a dog fearful of its owner and that’s no way for a dog to have to live. I do have a lot of hope for this dog though and the trainer did seem to understand, very well, the body language that the dog was exhibiting. So I have no doubt that they’ll be able to curb the dangerous behavior into a something that’s much better and more fun for the dog.
